Valley athletes earn runner-up finishes at Big C Relays

A handful of Valley athletes opened their track and field season with runner-up finishes during the Russ Edwards Big C Relays at The Dome in Anchorage over the weekend.

Colony’s Triton Ellis and Mattelyn Elliott, Palmer’s Nolan Garner and Susitna Valley’s Jessie Wentworth each finished second.

Ellis used a personal best of 5-foot-8 to place second in the boys high jump.

Garner also had a personal best throw of 133 feet, 8 inches to place second in the boys discus.

Wentworth hit 5 feet to finish second in the girls high jump for the Rams.

Elliott was second in the girls discus, with a personal best throw of 105 feet.

Ellis was one of two members of the Colony boys to place in two events. He was also fifth in the long jump. Grant Ousley was third in the boys shot put and fifth in the discus. Travis Saari finished fourth in the 400 meters, and Josiah Herrick was sixth in the 3,200. The Knights were also third in the 1,600-meter relay.

Corbin Gerkin placed in a pair of events for the Palmer boys, finishing sixth in both the high jump and long jump.

Ryan Gossett led the Susitna Valley boys, placing third in the high jump.

Halie Sandstrom was fourth in the high jump and Annelise Larsen placed fifth in the 200 for the Colony girls.

Leila Petersen led the Palmer girls with third-place finishes in the 200 and 400.

Mia Bukala was fourth for the Redington girls in the 300-meter hurdles.

Maurya McDaniel placed sixth for Su Valley in the girls high jump.

Jewel Gardner led the Wasilla girls finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles. Mia Christensen was also fifth in the girls discus.
