Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Vernis Dwain Lanz, 54, of Wasilla, died Jan. 27 at his home. Born Feb. 3, 1954 in Redmond, Ore., he moved with his family in 1956 to Seward and then to Juneau in 1960. He was a graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School.
Vernis was a heavy-equipment operator on the North Slope , Adak, Hawk Inlet, Young’s Bay and Taku Inlet, as well as Lanz Construction when he was 16 in the Juneau/Southeast area. He also did asbestos removal, heavy equipment work and general construction in the Mat-Su and Anchorage.
Vernis was an outdoorsman, fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed working with his hands, whether it was woodworking, carving or just playing his guitar Marty as he loved playing, singing and listening to country music.
His family wrote: “Vernis was an extremely talented man. He enjoyed the outdoors, music, family and friends. We know he’s someplace fishing, singing and embracing loved ones who have gone before him. He leaves behind family and more friends than you can count. We love you and miss you, Vernis.”
Survivors include three sons, Oren Chase Lanz, 25; Austin Lee Lanz, 24; and Coltin Claire Lanz, 14. Also, there are four granddaughters; two brothers, Arlen and Casey Lanz; one sister, Karla Rallo; and his girlfriend, Linda Smith.
