Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Vernon Edward Hill, 68, died Feb. 22, 2012, at Michael’s Assisted Living Home in Palmer.
Graveside services in honor of Vernon were March 1 at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Military honors were performed at the service by the U.S. Marine Corps honor guard.
Vernon was born April 11, 1943, in Duluth, Minn., to Arvo and Julia (Plain) Hill. He graduated high school and studied forestry in college for two years. Vernon served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, including time in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in March 1965.
He spent most of his working life in concrete and construction, and came to Alaska in 1980. Vernon enjoyed winter sports such as sled dog mushing and snowmachines.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Arvo Hill and Julia Wierimaa.
Surviving is his half-brother, Arvo Wierimaa of Duluth, Minn.
