Wallace Sumiaki Arima

Wallace Sumiaki Arima, 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Jan. 4, 2017 surrounded by family.

Wally was born Sept. 16, 1925 in Los Angeles, California. His mother, Chimo worked as a florist, his father, Albert, as a gardener. As Japanese immigrants, the family was placed in Relocation Center: Granada, internment camps during the Second World War. Not to be deterred by prejudice, Wally enlisted in the US Army. He became a rifleman in Company C, 442nd RCT and was posted in Leghorn, Italy where he proudly served his country, 1941-45.

After the war, he was honorably discharged became a professional free-lance photographer where his photos appeared in publications such as: Life, Sepia and Jet magazines. He eventually settled in Alaska, chose to apply his skills in upholstery, starting his own upholstery business. Along with longtime friend, Jim Dixon, he started Fine Line Interiors. They garnered an exceptional reputation for their auto upholstery work. Wally worked at his craft well after his retirement, creating beautiful pieces of furniture.

Wally had many interests and talents. He became a pilot, owning several planes throughout his life. With the help of his wife, Kathy, he became a master gardener. He spent many hours sailing in his handmade sailboat on Big Beaver Lake where he loved walking his dog and visiting with his many friends.

Wally is survived by his three daughters: Sono, Michiko and Kimiko, his son, Alec, his step-children Sherri, Deanna, Bryce, Randy, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 36 years, Kathleen Arima, son, Alan Arima and grandson, Donald William Steptoe.

Wally was always eager to share his skills and wisdom with those he loved. He lived a life of simplicity, and wanted not hing more than to pass quietly into the next world. He will be missed by many. A private ceremony will be held in spring.
