Walter Fergus was born March 3, 1925 in Halstad, KS and died in his home at Primrose Retirement Community in Wasilla of natural causes on October 26, 2020.
His family moved to Zook, KS, where he met Lila, his high school sweetheart and wife for 72 years. Lila died in 2017, and son, William Raymond in 1987. He is survived by his children, Mary and Fred, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Walter joined the Army fresh out of high school in 1943, where he served in the European theater of WWII. In the waning days of the war, his plane was shot down over northern Italy, and he spent the last 9 months of the war as a guest of the German Government. He served in the Tet Counter Offensive in Viet Nam. After Viet Nam, he was assigned to Fort Richardson as part of the Headquarters Group, promoted to Sergeant Major, and retired with 28 years in service.
In retirement, he worked as an RV repairman for Winnebago, graduated from Mat-Su College with a certificate in electronics, and worked as a technician for Apple Computers. He was a volunteer campground host in Glenallen, a member of the Dudes & Dames square dance club, and a volunteer at Mat-Su Regional Hospital.
He and Lila spent many summers on the road, traveling by RV to the lower 48, and all over Alaska.
Services will be held at Fort Richardson National Cemetery on November 12th at 1:00 pm.
