Walter Paul Schumacher

Walter Paul Schumacher Jr., 73, died Feb. 2, 2010, at home in Palmer.

A visitation will be held Monday at St. Michaels Catholic Church at 10 a.m., with Mass at noon. Burial at Ft. Richardson National Cemetery will be Tuesday. Father Tom Brundage will officiate.

Walter was born July 15, 193,6 in Sheboygan, Wis. He became an Alaska resident in 1964 and has resided in Palmer since 1975. He retired in 1991 from Richard Demming Land Surveying Associates. Walter was a volunteer firefighter, worked for the Palmer Senior Center, was a lifelong member of DAV (Disabled American Veterans) AMVETS and the American Legion. Walter enjoyed woodworking, model building, and he was a jack of all trades.

His family writes, “Walter was a man who believed in serving his community, held a strong conviction of right and wrong, and no matter what color, creed or nationality, justice could be found for all.”

He is survived by his wife Sonjah Schumacher; son William P. Schumacher; stepchildren Sandra Nelson, Margaret Kenmen, James Lovett, Amanda Lynn, Lettie Brickel, Alex Lovett and Sonya Long; mother Elvira Schumacher; and sisters Lois Sanders and Gertrude Tupper.
