Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wayne L. Kalfsbeek, 54, of Wasilla, died peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side in Anchorage on May 8.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the family home in Wasilla. Wayne Leslie Kalfsbeek was born Feb. 12,, 1955 in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Bernice (McCain) and Floyd Kalfsbeek. He grew up in Muskegon, Mich., and traveled to Alaska in 1978. He lived all around Southcentral Alaska, traveling between Kasilof and Talkeetna. Wayne worked as a pastry chef, a baker and a cook. He owned and operated his own restaurant, Independence Pizza. He retired in 2007 from the Wasilla Area Senior Center.
His family writes, “Wayne was an avid outdoorsman with a love for all of life. He enjoyed all kinds of music and was quite the banjo player. He loved jokes and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be loved and missed forever.”
Wayne is survived in death by his wife Teresa M. (Miller) Kalfsbeek; son Joseph, son and daughter-in-law Jayme and Jennifer Fiske, son Willie Kalfsbeek, daughter and son-in-law Anneliesa and James Garza; grandchildren Veronica, Victoria Carashea, Kai, Caymen; great- grandchild Allison; sister Lynn Kalfsbeek, sister-in-law Charlyn Parker, brother-in-law Don Byrde and father Floyd Kalfsbeek.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Bernice (McCain) Kalfsbeek.
