Florence was born Oct. 27, 1955, in Nome, to Dominic Kavesaluk Thomas and Ethel Marie Koweluk. Ippy grew up in East End village living out the traditional Eskimo life, dancing, picking berries, harvesting greens, mending nets, sewing, drying meats, entertaining tourists and camping.

In 1974, East End was devastated by a flood, forcing the residents to move to Nome. That same year, Florence gave birth to her first child, Kevin. Ippy joined the Army National Guard in May 1979 and was honorably discharged in May 1985 to raise her family. Her second son, Kavik, was born in 1982, followed by her first daughter, Jacquelyn, in 1985.

In 1986 Ippy moved to Seward, where she had her third son, Dominic. In 1987 Ippy gave birth to her second daughter, Lynnette. She opened up a gift shop, summer of 1997, while in Seward and was very successful.

On May 14, 2002, Florence was diagnosed with the disease scleroderma, which led to her passing.

Ippy was very active in her native culture throughout her life, always making kuspuks of all sizes, beading earrings, sewing Eskimo yoyos, and teaching others about the native culture. When she was younger she used to Eskimo dance in her father's dance group, and later on participated in yearly Eskimo dances and potlucks.

Her family said, &#8220Ippy always encouraged her family to learn more about the native culture. She passed on some of her knowledge in an after school beading and sewing class when her family lived down in Seward. She was very active in her children's life to God and encouraged her family to become more involved in church. Ippy always helped others when in need, doing what was required for others' comfort and well-being before seeking her own comfort and felt greatly rewarded by God in doing so, always praising His name for giving her the strength to comfort.

&#8220Ippy will be missed by all her family, friends and loved ones she met in life. She had a very memorable smile and laugh that won't be forgotten easily. She was one of the greatest and nicest people ever. May she rest in peace in God's loving embrace for all eternity.”
