William Stewart

William Grant Stewart, was born May 2, 1953, and he died Sept. 19, 2015, at the age of 62. Grant is the oldest child of Ann and Paul Stewart, who live in Bakersfield, California.

Grant’s father was in the Army, and the family moved to Camp Eielson, where they lived for a few years. At a young age, Grant fell in love with Alaska, and he wanted to live here after he graduated from college. He did follow that dream, and in 1979, after he graduated from BYU Law School, he and his little family moved to Alaska. They first lived in Anchorage, but in 1982 they moved to the Valley and they have lived in Wasilla ever since. Eventually, Grant opened his own law business, and he loved serving his clients.

Grant loved to hike, fish, go camping, and play board games with his family. He also was an avid reader, and a keen student of American and world history.

Grant was also an active Boy Scout leader and has served in many different areas of the program. He looked forward to the times when his troop would take off on 50-mile hiking trips, or sleep overnight in snow shelters to earn their 100-below badge.

He is survived by his parents, Paul and Ann (Chamberlain) Stewart; and his siblings, Robert (Candie) Stewart, Carolyn Stewart, Pam (Jerry) Hootman, Cheryl (Chuck) Smotherman, and Debbie (Heber) Farnsworth; and his children, Israel (Rebecca) Stewart, Daniel (Rose) Stewart, Jessica Stewart, Esther (Adam Pigg), Jeremiah (Stephanie) Stewart and Josiah Stewart; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Matthew Stewart, and his son, Isaiah Stewart.

His funeral will be on Saturday, Sept. 26, and it will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is on Bogard Street beside Wasilla High School. The viewing will be at noon, and the service at is at 1 p.m. There will be a special tribute to Grant’s involvement in the Boy Scouts of America, and Boy Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms.
