My pop passed away April 12, 2022 of sheer stubborn will. He was a sarcastic wit who loved writing letters to the editor (even had an alias Daryl Lichte), playing clarinet, reading and cooking. Pop was born in Renton WA on Dec 7, 1935 to Bill and Hazel Hayes. He says he hid under his bed on his 7th birthday due to Pearl Harbor being attacked. After high school he served in the Coast Guard, and rode his motorcycle all over the place. Loved to tell me about his adventures biking in Mexico. He came to Alaska in 1975 to see me, his daughter, and he never left. He got a job with old Doc McKinley out at the Butte and one day spotted a cute little blond there for a visit. That was Esther Kim Kertula Sutton and she was the love of his life. She passed in 1992. Pop had various jobs throughout his life including driving a tour bus in Denali. On one of his days off he rented a gorilla suit and went out waiting for the tour busses to pass, where he would jump out and amuse the unsuspecting guests. He was a funny, funny man and I’ll miss him.
He is survived by me and my family Heidi, Randy, Rory and Casey Main of Anchorage, step daughter Lynda Myers of Oregon, brother Sam and family of San Diego and Kim’s kids, Mark, Whitney and Kurt Sutton and families.
Special thanks to Nillie Darasin for taking such loving care of him.
No services will be held because he would absolutely hate that and would definitely haunt me.
