Winnifred “Winnie” Marie Burkett

Was born on July 29, 1954 in Holikachuk, raised there until 1966 then moved to Grayling. She attended Mt. Edgecumbe in Sitka and graduated in 1973. When she met Dave, she asked, “Who’s the ugly white man with the big nose” and they got married 3 months later on February 3, 1974. They had 45 years of bliss together, had four children: David, Matthew, Samuel and Sheral and adopted Kevin, Derek and Gwendolyn. After traveling around the world following her husband, who was in the U.S. Army, she returned to Grayling where she worked as a head start teacher and school secretary. After 20 years of village life they decided to move to Palmer. She was very vibrant, upbeat and outspoken, and lit up the room where ever it may have been. She was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Also loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports and always was the loudest cheerer. She was always proud of all her kids and grandbabies.

She is proceeded in death by her Mother, Lena Demientieff; stepfather John Collins; grandparents, Jack and Winnifred Nicholi.

She is survived by her husband David S. Burkett; sons David A. Burkett (Mary), Matthew (Carolyn), Samuel, Sheral, Kevin, Derek, Gwendolyn and seventeen grandbabies; Sisters, Charlotte West, Maidie Maillelle, Agnes Demientieff; and brother Jack; Uncles, Phillip Nicholi and William Nicholi; many extended family and friends.

She will be greatly missed and her memory treasured by all who knew her always.
