Winter conservation workshop series begins Jan. 17

MAT-SU — Wasilla Soil and Water Conservation District will offer a series of free classes on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Jan. 17, 24 and 31 at its office at 1700 E. Bogard Rd., Bldg. A, Suite 203. Class size is limited. For more information, or to reserve a space, call 357-4563, ext. 103.

Here are the classes offered:

• Jan. 17: “Ground Floor Intro to Alaskan Gardening” — The Introduction to Alaskan Gardening program is designed to introduce people to the fundamentals of gardening in Alaska. The PowerPoint presentation topics include season extension, fertilization requirements, soil sampling and more. Focus is on dealing with the challenges of growing in Alaska. This session is oriented to the first-time gardener. Helpful manuals will be provided.

• Jan. 24: 42 “Reasons Why to Sample My Soil” — Jeff Smeenk, manager of Palmer Soil and Water Conservation District, will provide information on the characteristics of Valley soils and planting nutrient needs, the reasoning behind and absolute necessity of testing, techniques, test results/analysis and application.

• Jan. 31: “Living with Salmon: Shoreline Stewardship and Restoration Opportunities for Landowners” — Thousands of salmon-bearing water bodies can be found throughout the Mat-Su Borough. If you live in the borough, there’s a good chance you live near one of them. You will learn how to improve recreation access to and enjoyment of your waterfront and shoreline while protecting it from increased rates of erosion. Valley examples of restoration projects will be showcased.
