Winter Weather Advisories Issued for Mat-Su

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Lower Matanuska Valley, including Palmer and Wasilla, as well as Anchorage and Eagle River. Rain and freezing rain are expected starting overnight, with ice accumulations around a light glaze.

The advisory is issued from 5:00 a.m. until noon Tuesday. Expect slick and hazardous roads, especially bridges and overpasses, which may make the morning commute treacherous.

Additionally, light rain may continue throughout the day, and in combination with surface temperatures right around freezing, may lead to a light glaze of icing on side and neighborhood roads.

Meanwhile, an additional advisory has been issued for Central Susitna Valley and Southern Susitna Valley, along the Parks Highway from Houston north to Talkeetna, as the forecast calls for snow and freezing rain, with total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze up to 0.15 inches, beginning at 1:00 a.m. Tuesday and lasting until 7:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Precipitation will predominantly be light freezing rain from early tomorrow morning through Wednesday morning. However, during the period of heaviest precipitation tomorrow morning, snow may mix with freezing rain at times.

Travel could be difficult as roads, bridges and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous.

If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.
