Following a pattern of a combination of freezing rain and warm weather that led to a hazardous morning commute, the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Anchorage has extended a winter weather advisory until Friday.
From the Mat-Su Valley on through Copper River Basin, a winter weather advisory remains in effect as additional light freezing rain anticipated for the Matanuska Valley through early Friday morning. Precipitation will taper off tonight for the Susitna Valley.
Cold temperatures tonight could cause water on untreated roadways to refreeze. Drivers should again plan on slippery road conditions for the morning commute, making travel difficult, especially on back and neighborhood roads in the morning. There may also be reduced visibility within areas of patchy fog.
Temperatures are expected to drop to freezing or slightly below freezing Thursday evening, leaving open the possibility that any water remaining on untreated roadways could re-freeze causing slippery conditions for the morning commute.
For Friday, forecasts indicate that light freezing rain is possible Friday morning for the Matanuska Valley, as well as the Susitna Valley, mainly from Talkeetna on to the south. Additionally, temperatures are expected to hover just above freezing from noon on into the afternoon.
