MAT-SU — Volunteers are needed for a “Mat-Su Community Day of Service” planned Sept. 14 to improve cross-country trails, build sledding hills, picnic tables and light poles at the Government Peak Recreation area off Edgerton Parks Road in Hatcher Pass.
Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, youth, women, men, children, businesses, Scouts, church, sports and community groups are welcome to help all day or for a few hours. Hot chili, cookies and water will be provided, bring your own water container.
“We will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. We hope 500 people from the community join us. There will be a variety of projects to accommodate different skill levels of the different people in attendance,” said Robert Kalander, project director for the Day of Service.
About 600 volunteers are needed to work on two sledding hills, trail cleaning, assembly picnic tables, install light poles, prepare lunch and to deliver water.
The 8,600-acre recreation area was opened by the Mat-Su Borough last winter for Nordic and alpine skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, mountain bikers, hiking, equestrian activities and more. Construction of a transit shelter and ski chalet will begin this fall.
