Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Max Elliott Hodsdon, age 91, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2024 at Mat Su Regional Hospital with family by his side.
He was born September 25, 1932 in Brodus, MT to Charles and Pansy Hodsdon. Max came to Alaska at the age of 4 in February 1937 with his family as replacement colonist. He joined the Military Police Service in 1953 through 1955 as the Company clerk.
In 1955 through 1961 he worked at Jonesville Mine (Miners Roup) strip mine as a heavy equipment operator and driller and was inducted into the Coal Miners Hall of Fame.
In 1961 Max went to work at MEA as a Groundman and became an Operator, then a Journeyman Lineman and ended his work at MEA as Foreman. In 1980 he worked Construction at which time he retired from the IBEW 1547 in 1987.
He truly loved life and had a passion for fishing, especially smoking fish and sharing it with everyone he knew. Alongside his wife Ruth, they cherished hosting family barbecues and spending quality time with loved ones. In retirement, they discovered their perfect getaway in Mazatlán, where they made lifelong friends and enjoyed every moment together.
He was an active member of the American Legion Post 15, Palmer Moose Club 793, Pioneers of Alaska and a life member of the Palmer Elks 1842. On December 27, 2020 he was presented with the Quilt of Honor from the American Legion.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Ruth Hodsdon, children Mike (Jenny), Melody, Mark, Cindy (Dickey), Juhree (Jim) and Terrie. He also leaves behind 16 grandkids and 13 great grandkids. He is survived by his brother Pat (Gloria) and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Pansy, siblings Charlie, Dick, and Kathy and Grandson Lee Hodsdon.
There will be a Celebration of Life on July 20th at the Palmer Moose Club at 1:00-3:00 PM. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. All family and friends are invited to join us in celebrating the life of Max Hodsdon.
