MAT-SU — What started as a food drive for the local women’s shelter has grown to include collection bins from Palmer to Big Lake.
Organized by Second To None Motorcycle Association, secretary Glenn Butts said the food drive will benefit the Food Pantry of Wasilla and culminates with a spaghetti dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Feb. 16 at the Mat-Su Alano Club, 901 E. Snohomish Ave., Wasilla. Tickets are $10 or 10 cans of food.
Donations bins are set up at area grocery stores — as well as the Denali Harley Davidson — to collect nonperishable food for the drive.
“We’ve gotten the most so far from the Harley shop,” Butts said.
Bins also are set up at Steve’s Food Boy, Wal-Mart, Carrs in Palmer and Wasilla and at all Three Bears locations in the Valley.
After talking to Eddie Ezelle at the Wasilla Food Pantry, Butts said the club decided to broaden the scope of the food drive to lift donations at pantries during this traditionally slow time of year.
“Christmas to Easter is the barest time at the food banks,” Butts said.
To assist with the effort, the local Alano Club has donated the use of its facility for the spaghetti feed. Butts said the meal wouldn’t be possible without donations from House of Bread and Great Alaska Pizza Co.
Butts said Second To None Motorcycle Association is a clean and sober group of riders dedicated to community service.
