WASILLA — Local golfers may have to put away the sticks and break out the skis one last time.

Heavy snow was expected in parts of the Matanuska Valley overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday, with the National Weather Service predicting as much as six inches of snow in some areas.

A Winter Weather Advisory issued Tuesday was scheduled to go into effect at 5 p.m. and last through 1 p.m. Wednesday. The storm was forecast to bring about two inches of snow to much of the Valley, with more falling at higher elevations and north of Palmer.

The snow was expected to taper off by midday Wednesday.

The advisory comes at the end of an almost snowless winter at lower elevations of the Valley. Government agencies have warned of high fire danger due to the conditions, which allowed the Palmer Golf Course to open two weeks earlier than its previous record opening.
